Senior Centers | Westerly Senior Center

Provides a wide variety of social, educational, health and recreational activities and programs. Paid membership is $25 per year and is not limited to Westerly residents. Services include: Meal Program - lunch is served Mon - Friday at noon to those 60 and older (or to those under 60 with a handicap, disability, or married to a participant over 60). A suggested donation of $3/meal is requested. Meals are provided through Westbay Community Action. Reservations are requested a week in advance though you may call any day to see if spaces are available. Transportation may be arranged at the time of reservation. Transportation Medical Rides: MTM is the State program for medical rides. To make reservations, call 1-855-330-9131. Center Van: available Tuesday - Thursday for shopping, hairdresser, barber, banking, and nursing home visits. Contact Edie Jacobson, the Transportation Coordinator to make a reservation. (401) 596-7216 Recreational Activities include billiards, bridge, Bingo, ping pong, corn hole, cribbage, pitch, table shuffleboard, floor shuffleboard, and MahJongg Arts & Crafts includes a craft group, art, quilters, wood carving and music Social Activities: day and overnight trips Educational Opportunities include lectures and book clubs. Health and Fitness: line dancing, TOPS (Taking off Pounds Sensibly), Tai Chi and yoga. Social Services Social Workers: An Elder Information Specialist is available for information, resource linkage and referral, short-term counseling, and assistance with medical / consumer issues. The department will also provide home visits if seniors are unable to come to the Center. The following is a partial list of services available: RIPAE, Housing Assistance, Heating, Financial Assistance, Medical (Federal/State), Medicare Savings Program, SHIP, Health Insurance, Printed Source Material, Medical Equipment Loan(s). Also, numerous special programs involving senior issues are scheduled throughout the year. Support Groups: Various support groups are offered at the Senior Center. INSIGHT (a support group for those with visual impairments) meets quarterly, please check the Newsletters. Alcoholics Anonymous meets Sunday - Saturday at 7:30 AM in the triple room, Mondays at 7 PM, Tuesdays at 6 PM, and Fridays at 7 PM. There is also a Women's only group on Wednesdays at 10 AM, and a Men's only group Wednesdays at 7 PM. New members are welcome to attend, regardless of Center membership. Narcotics Anonymous meets Saturdays at 10:00 AM in the conference room. New members are welcome to attend, regardless of Center membership. Al-Anon, for family members of those attending AA meetings, meets Fridays at 7:00 PM in the conference room. New members are welcome to attend, regardless of Center membership. Additional groups are scheduled according to season and schedule availability. Health Programs Visiting Nurse: VNS Home Health Services provides a visiting nurse to the Center who will meet individually at no cost with senior citizens to discuss current health problems, to take blood pressures, and to offer basic advice. The visiting nurse is at the Senior Center every fourth Tuesday of each month from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Appointments are made on a first-come first-served basis. URI Pharmacy Mini Clinic The University of Rhode Island Mini Clinic is held on the fourth Monday of the month from 11 AM to noon. You may have blood pressure checked or review medications. Special Programs Medical Equipment Donations: Accepted at the Center to assist others who may need items such as: wheelchairs, bedside commodes, toilet seats, shower chairs, transport chairs and adult underwear, walkers, etc. Should you need medical equipment or adult underwear, please call the center so we can fill out a slip for the item(s). We fill orders on a daily basis as the needed item are received based on a first come first served basis. Health Insurance: The Senior Center allows representatives from various health insurance programs to make presentations and offer information on their respective programs at the Center on a continual basis. The Senior Center does not endorse any particular plan but does provide the space and opportunity for these programs so that you, the consumer, can make an educated choice based on the information you may be seeking.
