Higher Ground International is a forward thinking and culturally grounded inter-generational social service NGO that advocates and provides programs for West African Immigrants, Refugees and Marginalized Communities in Rhode Island and Rural Villages in Liberia, West Africa. Located on the South side of Providence, Rhode Island, HGI's vibrant and welcoming RUKIYA CENTER provides members of the West African Immigrants and Refugees community with elder services (Sweetie Care, African Elders Enrichment Program), Soft skills pre-employment and workforce development, literacy classes for women, basic computer and design classes, therapeutic arts, cultural enrichment, advocacy, case management, immigration & citizenship classesand other wraparound services for youth and families. HGI’s for-profit arm, Broken Pieces International, engages adults, at-risk youth and other under-served populations in the design and manufacture of clothing and accessories that reflect the character and community of both HGI and the West African diaspora. This provides them with vital job training and economic opportunities, and the revenue generated supports HGI’s work in Liberia. This innovative model fosters important connections to the culture and history of the mother country for Liberians living abroad, and reinforces HGI’s mission to uplift communities through empowerment and self-sustainability.

The Veterans Transitional Supportive Program (VTSP) is a collaborative effort by the Rhode Island Veterans Home and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to assist homeless veterans in their return to community living. The objectives of treatment are to have each veteran achieve an optimal level of functioning mentally, physically, vocationally and socially so when community housing is located they will not experience homelessness again. Residents typically can remain in the program from six months to a year where they are assisted with substance abuse treatment, work therapy, case management services, individual counseling, medical and psychiatric treatment and discharge planning. Each veteran is expected to develop an individualized treatment plan and work with his/her case manager to resolve those issues which contributed to his homelessness.

Coddington Manor is subsidized housing 62+, handicapped, disabled and families.

There are going to be three main types of places where people will be able to get vaccinated: The first type of place is a state-run vaccination site. The second location where vaccine will be available will be retail pharmacies. The third type of place where people will be able to get vaccinated is local and regional vaccination sites. These will include community clinics run by cities and towns. It will also include vaccination happening through some hospital and healthcare systems, community health centers, and other sites in the community. Registration for these sites will be determined by municipalities.

Home Care We all need a little help sometimes. Home care services help people age strong in the community, connecting them with in-home supports, adult day health programming, and/or assisted living services. For older adults with care needs, the @Home Cost-Share program is available to help with some care expenses. Eligible participants can access in-home services – such as help with housekeeping, meal preparation or personal care – and/or community-based programming at adult day health centers at a reduced rate. You may be eligible for the program if you are age 65 or older, meet income guidelines, and need some assistance in the home with your personal or health care. Psychiatric Nursing Services: We provide psychiatric nurses to our clients who are in need of psychological support. Our psychiatric nurses coordinate with your psychiatric care providers, as well as monitor and administer your medication.

Jamestown Emergency Management Agency, in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Health and Rhode Island Emergency Management, implements policies related to hazard mitigation and emergency management programs and activities. The EMA also has general supervision of all civil preparedness duties and performs any other duties as assigned by the Town Manager. Jamestown EMA staff is trained to distribute medical supplies, food and water at times when it may be required. Shelter: Melrose School, located at 76 Melrose Ave will be operational and staffed in partnership with the Rhode Red Cross at anytime that residents may be required to leave their homes. The staff at the shelter is trained to provide basic needs including food, water and medical treatment. Pets may also be sheltered at the Lawn Avenue School during these events.

Ashton Village is a LIHTC development offering one, two, three, and four bedroom apartments. Designed for singles and families, income guidelines are established through the Tax Credit program.

The Norman Bird Sanctuary constitutes the largest area of preserved open space in Newport County. A wildlife refuge, NBS encompasses over 300 acres and seven miles of trails that wind through diverse habitats. Nearly 30 acres are maintained as hay fields. Woodlands are the most prominent plant community, and four ridges provide spectacular views of the surrounding ocean and ponds.
