Our Independent Living/Deaf Services Coordinator works one-on-one with consumers providing assistance in a variety of ways including: They teach consumers to advocate for themselves with tasks such as getting a sign language interpreter for appointments at doctor’s offices, hospitals, Social Security Offices, DHS offices, landlord’s offices etc; accessing community services, requesting reasonable accommodations and addressing general communication issues; provides services to obtain housing. Also provides assistance with bill/letter translation.

The RIde Program is for people with disabilities that prevent the use of fixed-route buses, RIPTA offers paratransit service through the RIde Program, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ADA Paratransit provides door to door service and requires advance reservations. RIde is a shared ride service so your trip time may not be scheduled at the exact time you request. A RIde Customer Service Agent will work with you to find a time that works. You may need to call back later to find out the time your trip is scheduled. The officers have received CPR, Automatic Emergency Defibrillator and first aid training. The Department has a complete Bureau Criminal Identification unit, a Traffic Accident Reconstructionist and a Tactical Special Response Team. Many officers are graduates of the University of Rhode Island Criminalist School, with training in scientific investigation, photography and fingerprinting.
