Westerly Animal Control is part of the Westerly Police Department and is responsible for enforcing Town ordinances as well as State and Federal laws pertaining to animals and animal husbandry. The Westerly Animal Control Officer is under the direct supervision of the Captain of the Police Department. Westerly Animal Control is also responsible for properly carrying out the rules and regulations pertaining to the Rhode Island Rabies Management Protocol as well as conducting vicious dog hearings, controlling the feral cat population and speaking to groups, neighborhood associations and school children regarding humane education. Primary goals for Animal Control is to educate Westerly citizens on proper pet guardianship, rabies awareness, co-existing with area wildlife and effective enforcement by means of example, meaningful dialogue or by more serious measures through animal impoundment, citations/summons and municipal or district court.

WIC: The Tri-County Community Action Agency Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides supplemental foods, healthcare referrals and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. Upon enrollment into the WIC program, a nutritional assessment will be completed for you and your eligible family members. They will then offer education on healthy eating, monthly vouchers for nutritious foods including eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, beans, tuna, fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, rice, iron fortified cereals, and juice as well as many other valuable resources. Breastfeeding and lactation support and education are also available through the WIC program.

Programs Include: Traditional Program - The Traditional Mentoring Program matches at-risk girls and boys between the ages of 7 and 15, in long-term, one-to-one relationships with adult female and male volunteer mentors. �Big Mentor League� Program - This is a special program provided by Big Sisters of Rhode Island, in partnership with the Urban League of Rhode Island and Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership working with girls & boys who have a parent currently incarcerated. The girls/boys range in age from 4 to 18 years old and are from all over Rhode Island. Hermana(o) a Hermana(o) - BBBSOS matches Latina girls/Latino boys with mentors. The girls/boys are considered to be at-risk for academic failure or delinquency or lacking a strong role model. School-Based Mentoring - This program provides mentorship to both girls and boys after class at their school. This program provides a structured environment to assist in academic success. Donation Center - The BSRI Donation Center provides a sustained source of revenue for the vital social service activities of the agency by collecting donations of gently used clothing, household items, small appliances, books and toys (also accepts TV's, computers, and other large electronics for a $10 processing fee) through a combination of scheduled home pick-ups, on-site clothing drop-offs, and targeted community clothing drives.
