As one of the oldest African Heritage organizations in the country, the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society has recorded, retained and interpreted these historical facts and preserved the documents and artifacts of African-American and African descendant’s history and accomplishments in Rhode Island. The primary mission is the preservation of African Diaspora descendant’s historical artifacts – books, art, papers and images, as well as facilitating the interpretation efforts by those seeking to enlighten others about our heritage.

OSCIL offers comprehensive independent living assessment services as requested by private individuals, vendors, Medicaid and State agencies. Comprehensive assessments provide recommendations for specialized equipment, home modifications and/or independent living services that are required for the consumer to achieve goals for independence in the home and community. OSCIL has a fee-for-service program to provide assessments. We are currently working with consumers on RI Medicaid, Neighborhood Health Plan’s Integrity Program and the Office of Rehabilitation Services (ORS). Medicaid/NHP assessments are typically done to provide justification for specialized equipment covered by the consumer’s insurance. Some examples would include, ramps, stairlifts, VPLs, and specialized bathroom equipment. Consumer’s must be on a participating insurance plan to receive the assessment; if they are on another insurance plan OSCIL will refer the consumer to the correct process for assessment. OSCIL also completes assessments for home modifications funded by the Office of Rehabilitation Services (ORS). First ORS will send a referral requesting the Home Modification Assessments, and then OSCIL staff will complete a full assessment to recommend any home modification to increase accessibility and send a report of the findings to ORS.

The mission of the RISPCA is to protect and advocate for the rights and welfare of animals through legal, educational, legislative and investigative means.

Member of the Assistive Technology Access Partnership: Device demonstration, device loan, device re-use; training, public awareness, collaboration, information and referral. Provides demonstrations, training, and long-term loan and device reutilization services of specialized telephone equipment to qualified individuals who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, have a speech disability, or have neuromuscular damage or disease, which hinders them from using a standard telephone.

Resources for Human Development-RI helps adults with developmental disabilities reach their goals. With a strong focus on the arts, RHD works with its Participants to develop new skills, become more integrated in the local community and explore a variety of employment opportunities. RHD also contracts directly with a number of school departments around the state to provide supports for students too young for adult services.

An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International serving the Birstol County area of Rhode Island whose aim is to eliminate substandard housing by building and rehabilitating homes that are affordable to low-income individuals and families from the local community. To succeed, people with disabilities need information, resources and competent support systems. The Sherlock Center offers several comprehensive training programs specifically for direct support professionals, managers, job developers, and educators supporting individuals with disabilities to become meaningfully employed. Volunteers help children develop the skills, confidence, and strength to succeed in life. Foster Grandparents make their neighborhoods stronger by assisting children in need at schools, Head Start sites, Boys & Girls Clubs, libraries and other non-profit organizations. Volunteers must be 55 years or older and meet certain income eligibility requirements.

Services: Provides direct financial assistance for active or retired Naval and Marine Corps personnel and their dependents. Provides access for Army, Air Force and Coast Guard personnel with reimbursement from respective societies. Budget assistance, and layettes; information about dependency allowances, pensions, government insurance, locating and communicating with Navy personnel and community resources. Warren Center provides ShortStay and LongTerm Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitative services which include Physical, Occupational, Speech, and Respiratory Therapies in our newly renovated Rehabilitation Gym. Enjoy restaurant-style dining services while overlooking our beautiful courtyard. The multi-disciplinary team at Warren Center consists of Physicians, Nurses, a Social Worker, a Dietitian, a Recreation Director, and Rehabilitative Therapists who are all dedicated and compassionate in the development and delivery of every individualized treatment plan. The Warren Center accepts admissions 7 days a week, and tours are welcome at any time.

Medicare is managed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Social Security works with CMS by enrolling people in Medicare. Medicare is the country’s health insurance program for people age 65 or older. Certain people younger than age 65 can qualify for Medicare, too, including those with disabilities and those who have permanent kidney failure.

Tutors for Refugee Students The Immigration and Refugee Services assist many refugee clients who have children. Their children are enrolled in school but need extra help reading, writing and speaking English in order to keep up with their school work. Refugee student tutors set up a schedule with the parents of the student to tutor the child or children twice a week after school for an hour or two each session at the student’s home.

Programs that provide a graded system of learning in a formal school setting from grades nine or 10 through 12 for adolescents who usually range in age from 13 or 14 to 18. High schools provide formal instruction for students who want to prepare themselves for further education at the college/university level as well as those who prefer to seek employment immediately after high school graduation. The curriculum for students who are planning to terminate their formal education focuses on vocational preparation whereas that for college/university-bound students focuses on providing the required number of hours of instruction in targeted subjects to enable them to meet college/university entrance requirements.
