volunteers are people age 55 and older who provide companionship for frail older adults in the home, at day centers, or other community sites. Companions assist with daily tasks, helping those served to remain living in the community for longer. Companions may provide transportation to medical appointments, shopping assistance, meal preparation, and advocacy. They also provide respite to caregivers of frail elders. By remaining active and contributing to their communities, Companions benefit from the program along with the clients they serve.

RI Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) Educates and assists Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries, family members, and caregivers throughout Rhode Island to protect personal healthcare information, detect healthcare errors, waste, fraud, and abuse, and to resolve suspected instances of healthcare fraud, errors or abuse. @Home Cost Share: For older adults with care needs, the @Home Cost-Share program is available to help with some care expenses. Eligible participants can access in-home services – such as help with housekeeping, meal preparation or personal care – and/or community-based programming at adult day health centers at a reduced rate. You may be eligible for the program if you are age 65 or older, meet income guidelines, and need some assistance in the home with your personal or health care.

DEA Protective Services Unit is responsible for investigating complaints of elderly abuse of Rhode Islanders 60 and older by a family member, caregiver or person with duty of care.. Abuse may include physical, emotional, sexual, financial exploitation, or abandonment. The DEA Protective Services Unit develops a care plan to prevent additional abuse and address the elder’s social service needs. Self-Neglect occurs when a person is no longer able to care for himself/herself. Reports of self-neglect are also made to the DEA Protective Services Unit. The senior’s needs are assessed and necessary services are 0ffered.

Centers for Independent Living teach a wide range of skills needed to live independently and manage life with a disability. Skills training is available to persons with disabilities in almost any topic where there is a need for more independence. CILs work with individuals to increase their skills which can help them gain more control of their lives. Skills training can include basic everyday responsibilities such as: self-care, meal preparation, budgeting, and arranging transportation. It also can address housing needs, teaching individuals the importance of self-advocacy, one’s need for accommodations and/or rights in the community. ***Life skills training is goal directed and does not involve long-term case management or therapeutic intervention. As part of OSCIL’s mission to provide outreach, education and opportunities for peer support, OSCIL offers Lunch and Learn workshops highlighting various solutions that can increase access in your home and community.
