The Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection Unit investigates and mediates consumer complaints concerning unfair and unlawful business practices and misleading advertising arising out of alleged violations of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. If groups of people are victimized by a deceptive trade practice, this office may file in the Superior Court a civil investigative demand, which is a formal investigation. In appropriate cases, a lawsuit to stop the illegal business practice may be initiated. Apart from carrying out its statutory responsibilities, the Unit also provides information and referral services to the general public. Consumers are directed to the appropriate governmental or private agencies for help in answering specialized questions or resolving disputes that are not within the Unit's jurisdiction.

Neighborhood Friendly Visitor Program A community-based volunteer program that provides weekly visitors to isolated elderly and disabled adults in Rhode Island. The program was developed in 1978 by Sister Rhea Lachapelle of the Sisters of Saint Ann to address the needs of a growing and diverse population of elderly living alone with little or no social support. Any elder (60 + years) or disabled person that is homebound, residing in any elderly care facility ( nursing homes, assisted living or patients at hospitals) is eligible for this program. There are no income guidelines and there is no fee for this service. Friendly Visitor volunteers are available state-wide. Volunteers have supplied personnel references and passed a background check through the office of the attorney general. The program has on-going recruitment of volunteers who make a commitment to visit or call the elderly for at least one hour each week. Blackstone Valley Community health Care (BVCHC) has established a program that reduces fees charged to patients based on their income and family size. The categories we use are based on percentages of “Poverty Level” as annually determined by the federal government. Qualifying patients will pay a nominal fee if they qualify for 100% of poverty. Patients between 101% and 200% will pay a amount depending on their family size and percentage of poverty. Every program has requirements and BVCHC’s Sliding Fee Program is no different.
