The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence’s (ISPN) mission is to teach, by word and example, the principles and practices of nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions. To work to build Dr. King’s ideal of the nonviolent Beloved Community. ISPN’s 2017-2019 AmeriCorps program focuses 20 Americorps members in school based nonviolence programs which work with students to develop attitudes, skills, and behaviors to further a movement to achieve lasting reductions in violence that occurs in our communities. ISPN AmeriCorps members are implementing nonviolence education curriculum for at least 1,000 economically disadvantaged students in ten schools over the course of the year. Teams of two AmeriCorps members provide nonviolence education for five classrooms of 20 students, for a total of 100 students trained in each participating school. The members teach one or two classes of students each day for four days a week. When not teaching, members work to mediate conflicts between students who are having problems with each other. They help students who have been assigned to in-school suspension to develop strategies to navigate problems at school in more effective ways.

Blackstone Valley Community health Care (BVCHC) has established a program that reduces fees charged to patients based on their income and family size. The categories used are based on percentages of “Poverty Level” as annually determined by the federal government. Qualifying patients will pay a nominal fee if they qualify for 100% of poverty. Patients between 101% and 200% will pay an amount depending on their family size and percentage of poverty. Every program has requirements and BVCHC’s Sliding Fee Program is no different.

As a nonprofit, our operations are guided by a value-driven and compassionate philosophy of treating each resident as a family member. We provide high-quality, personalized care while respecting individual needs and wants, and have been serving our local community since 2011. Our goal is to provide residents with the opportunity to live comfortably and safely with dignity and respect in a caring community. Each resident has a private apartment varying in size that can accommodate one or two people. Apartments include individual climate controls, security cameras, cable and phone connections, disabilities-accessible bathrooms and amenities such as laundry services, onsite beauty salon and barbershop, weekly ecumenical religious services, outdoor courtyard garden, rooftop terrace and more.

Hospital charity care requirements cover those essential services necessary to diagnose, correct, or cure a medical condition that endangers life, causes pain and suffering, results in illness or infirmity, or causes a physical deformity or malfunction. Both inpatient and outpatient services are included. To receive full charity care, patients annual family income must be up to and including 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. For partial charity care, patients annual family income must be between 200% and 300% of the Federal Poverty Level may receive assistance based on a sliding scale. In addition to income, hospitals have the option to consider other assets. Also must be denied from Medicaid first depending on income.
