Thrive’s Residential Services connects adults who are experiencing severe and persistent mental illness with resources and community-based mental health support in a supported housing environment. The philosophy of Residential Services is based on a comprehensive yet intensive approach to treatment that helps residents achieve their highest quality of life. Thrive’s staff help clients learn how to control the symptoms of their mental illness and achieve increased independence in all aspects of their daily lives. One of the core functions of the Ocean State Center for Independent Living is assisting people with disabilities to move out of nursing homes and other institutions into the independent living arrangement of their choice, as well as helping to prevent people with disabilities from entering these institutions. The Ocean State Center for Independent Living (OSCIL), a non-residential, non-profit organization, can help seniors and adults with disabilities who are interested in transitioning from nursing facilities back into the community—either moving back to their own home or apartment or to the home of a relative or friend. OSCIL’s Community Living Option Program has been assisting persons with disabilities to move from a nursing home setting to a less restrictive environment for many years. OSCIL staff is able to work with each individual to identify their specific needs, help secure appropriate housing, establish community connections and obtain support services—all necessary for a safe and sustainable transition. The James L. Maher Center operates residential programs for its participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities. New Meadows is one of 11 group homes for adults with developmental disabilities in several East Bay and Aquidneck Island communities. Programs and supports in each group home are customized to the needs of residents with differing abilities. The facility is staffed with professionals who have the special skills and experience required to attend to the needs of the residents of the group home. In all cases, staff are careful to match participants with residential support program that will help to ensure a positive outcome.

Avatar is a certified Placement Agency for Shared Living programs throughout Rhode Island. Avatar Residential was one of the first agencies in Rhode Island to provide Shared Living Arrangements (SLAs) as an alternative to group home living. The key to success is a strong relationship between residents and Shared Living Providers. Avatar coordinates 27 SLAs throughout the state of RI. Some of the people that Avatar supports have found a good fit in their apartment/independent living programs. They tailor services to what people need (shopping, budgeting, recreation) while also fostering a great deal of independence and self-sufficiency. Avatar also provides residential services to people who live at home with their families.

OSCIL assists other agencies to help their consumers find the best solutions for increased independence by offering comprehensive assessment services in the areas of independent living, assistive technology and training and home accessibility. These services are provided on a fee for service basis.
