SHIP Counseling

Offers support to Medicaid eligible Rhode Island residents who are interested in returning to the community after a nursing home stay. The program provides information and support to help the person evaluate their needs and develop a plan of care.

Experienced case management professionals will assess the client and living conditions to make improvements to overall quality of life. Experienced elder care specialists will talk with you honestly and confidentially about your loved one’s situation. Collaborative care plans are developed, services implemented and continued evaluations and monitoring are provided to ensure success.

Provides income for individuals and their families as partial replacement of earnings lost because of old age retirement, disability or death. Benefits and benefit amounts are dependent on contributions and past earnings of covered workers and their employers. Administers SSI program for persons 65 and over; 65 and under if blind or disabled.

Congress created the Medicare program, which began in 1965. The Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services or CMS administers the Medicare program. Medicare was not designed to pay 100% of all medical bills of the member. When someone qualifies for Medicare the enrollment process starts automatically (on a case by case basis) by Social Security Administration in connection with CMS. If this does not happens automatically, the individual can get enrolled by contacting Social Security Administration directly to start the process. Medicare consists of four parts. These parts are called Part A known as hospital insurance, Part B which is the Medical insurance, Part C known as Medicare Advantage, and Part D a stand-alone prescription drug coverage. Medicare members have the option of choosing a non-Medicare plan which is known as a Supplemental Insurance, often called Medigap. You can meet with them for an unbiased session of counseling and learn about all of your options to make an informative decision.
