MLK Jr. Community Center is a nonprofit service provider for at-risk individuals, families and seniors. Hunger Services On Site Food Pantry - providing non-perishable food, frozen meat, fresh produce, bread and household and personal care items to our Newport County residents. All clients are eligible to shop once per month. Mobile Food Pantry - visits neighborhoods across Newport County each month on a rotating schedule. Resource for individuals seeking information on all aspects of senior services working closely with the Department of Elderly Affairs, Smithfield Police Department, local Tri-Town agency and Northwest Health Care Services. The Center strives to meet the needs and desires of the greatest number of seniors in creating organized activities and workshop areas. The program includes- Recreation, Socialization, Transportation, Fitness Activities, Field Trips, Referrals to community resources, meals. Operates a meal site for senior citizens and provides Meals on Wheels. to a large numbers of individuals within the community.

Visiting Nurse: VNS Home Health Services provides a visiting nurse to the Center who will meet individually at no cost with senior citizens to discuss current health problems, to take blood pressures, and to offer basic advice. The visiting nurse is at the Senior Center every fourth Tuesday of each month from 9:30am to 1:30pm. Appointments are made on a first come first served basis. URI Pharmacy Mini Clinic- The University of Rhode Island Mini Clinic is held on the fourth Monday of the month from 11am to noon. You may have blood pressure checked or review medications. SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Medical Equipment Donations: Accepted at the Center to assist others who may need items such as: wheelchairs, bedside commodes, toilet seats, shower chairs, transport chairs and adult underwear, walkers, etc. Should you need medical equipment or adult underwear, please call the center so we can fill out a slip for the item(s). We fill orders on a daily basis as the needed item are received based on a first come first served basis Health Insurance: The Senior Center allows representatives from various health insurance programs to make presentations and offer information on their respective programs at the Center on a continual basis. The Senior Center does not endorse any particular plan but does provide the space and opportunity for these programs so that you, the consumer, can make an educated choice based on the information you may be seeking. The Picillo Center is a community center where older individuals can participate in community-based outings, physical fitness exercises, art therapy and horticulture activities throughout the day. The gardening project, initially started in 2009, has transformed into a genuine Horticulture program and business. Since its inception, this small garden has grown into a larger fenced garden, incorporating raised flowerbeds allowing for ease with plant care. With interest and ability improving, employees of the program successfully sponsored a number of fundraising events for the purpose of purchasing a greenhouse. With this in place, gardeners are able to begin their harvest earlier by starting with the seedlings. While both of these projects are enjoyable and healing, they also serve as an employment opportunity with produce and flowers being sold to individuals, local vendors and at farm fresh fairs.

Provides multi-services for elderly including transportation, social services, meal site, education, advocacy, health services, group activities, outreach and inter-generational programs. Sunday religious services program for the Indochinese (Lao and Hmong spoken). The center also hosts health screenings and speakers who give valuable information on various health topics. The ultimate goal being to keep older people healthy, independent and in their own homes. Income Source: Catholic Charities; Dept of Elderly Affairs; Grants, Donations. The agency is recognized nationally, as well as statewide, as an important resource for information on issues relating to the older population. Training is provided to lay leaders, civic groups, college field placement students and family caregivers. Staff is available to guide older adults through the social service maze to locate resources such as Social Security, SSI, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Pharmaceutical Assistance, and subsidized housing. They have a Hispanic outreach worker. The Center's social service staff continually follows up on referrals from neighbors, friends, family and other agencies, leading them to older people with problems of abuse, self neglect, financial management, lack of food, no heat, poor health and other crisis situations Coordinator The center's program coordinator develops and implements activities for today's" seniors. Seniors can join a computer class and explore the internet or stay in shape with a fitness group. Maybe they would like to do volunteer work in the community or be a part of intergenerational programs that offer an opportunity to bring students and elderly together. Craft classes are offered. Many enjoy playing a friendly game of cards or watching a good movie.

Services: Thirteen senior meal sites in northern Rhode Island serve a weekday lunch geared to the nutrition requirements of people over 60 (reservations required). Weekday day care for frail seniors and disabled; information and referral including assistance with health insurance, fuel assistance, tax abatements and enrollment in benefit programs. The mission of the Tiverton Senior Center is to reach out to all citizens in the community who are 55 or older to offer socialization, education, recreation, congregate meals, and various health and informational services that will improve the quality of life for all participants.

Rhode Island's Statewide Self-Advocacy organization. Works to help people understand information more clearly, learn about rights, participate in their communities and share their unique gifts with the rest of society. Also works to raise public awareness about disabilities. Activities include: - Hosting an annual statewide Self-Advocacy conference. Approximately 430 people attend. - Hosting an annual Statewide Self-Advocacy Town Hall style meeting. Approximately 300 people attend. - Designing/Adapting accessible materials in a variety of formats to help people understand issues related to Self-Advocacy. - Coordinating a year-long Leadership Series training for individuals who have a Developmental Disability, families and direct support staff. - Bringing disability awareness experiences to schools, colleges, businesses, support agencies and others.

Outreach Services are offered to the senior (60+) and disabled adult population of Scituate to assist with applications for financial and benefit assistance, including SNAP (Food Stamps), Fuel Assistance, Housing, and Medical Insurance, as well as information or referral to Meals On Wheels and the Food Pantry. Transportation Coordinator at 781-545-8872. Rides within Scituatte should be scheduled at least 2 days in advance; out-of-town medical rides should be scheduled at least 5 days in advance. For new clients, a brochure should be requested and signed in order to begin to schedule rides with the Senior Center. Meals on Wheels and the Food Pantry. The Scituate Senior Center/Council on Aging provides transportation services to Scituate adults 60+, and those who meet ADA requirements for general rides within Scituate as able, as well as rides to and from Medical appointments in the area, including out-of-town as far as Boston. The Center is a private, non-profit community focal point for residents of Newport County and surrounding communities where older persons can come together for services and/or activities which enhance their dignity, reflect their experience and skills, support their independence, encourage their involvement in and with the Center and the community, and respond to their diverse needs and interests.
