Melrose School, located at 76 Melrose Ave will be operational and staffed in partnership with the Rhode Red Cross at anytime that residents may be required to leave their homes. The staff at the shelter is trained to provide basic needs including food, water and medical treatment. Pets may also be sheltered at the Lawn Avenue School during these events.

They also work to build, sustain, and improve the capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all natural, human-caused, and technological hazards.
They work to facilitate long-range planning activities that result in the development of comprehensive strategies to safeguard the public and property. This section is responsible for the administration of the National Flood Insurance Program, statewide emergency planning, including the ongoing enhancement of Rhode Island's Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan and the coordination of local and state plans, utilizing an all-hazards approach.
The Planning and Mitigation Section also focuses on current topics in emergency management, such as improving the State's resiliency to climate change and for future disasters through adaptation and mitigation programs.
