They work to facilitate long-range planning activities that result in the development of comprehensive strategies to safeguard the public and property. This section is responsible for the administration of the National Flood Insurance Program, statewide emergency planning, including the ongoing enhancement of Rhode Island's Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan and the coordination of local and state plans, utilizing an all-hazards approach.
The Planning and Mitigation Section also focuses on current topics in emergency management, such as improving the State's resiliency to climate change and for future disasters through adaptation and mitigation programs.

Jamestown EMA staff is trained to distribute medical supplies, food and water at times when it may be required.
Shelter:
Melrose School, located at 76 Melrose Ave will be operational and staffed in partnership with the Rhode Red Cross at anytime that residents may be required to leave their homes. The staff at the shelter is trained to provide basic needs including food, water and medical treatment. Pets may also be sheltered at the Lawn Avenue School during these events.

The duty of the West Warwick EMA is to coordinate and direct the planning, organization, control, and implementation of local emergency management activities. Additional duties and activities include the following: Coordinate with community officials and with the Rhode Island Emergency Management Agency (RIEMA) as necessary to ensure the effective administration of the emergency management program; Manage, operate, and maintain the Emergency Operations Center (EOC); Establish and maintain agency emergency policies and communication procedures for all West Warwick employees and volunteers; Coordinate, develop, and implement the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) for the Town of West Warwick; Prepare and distribute disaster preparedness material to the citizens of West Warwick; Coordinate the actions and uses of West Warwick assets during emergency exercises and actual occurrences of natural disasters.
