Neighbors Helping Neighbors Rhode Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families stay in their homes through a variety of ways, primarily by providing necessary home repairs and modifications. NHN RI offers services including building wheelchair ramps, painting houses indoor or out, repairing porches or steps, patching roofs, and fixing windows. All of these can make real differences to neighbors in need. Necessary home repairs are often left undone when people are faced with the need to stretch their paycheck, disability check, or Social Security income. In some cases, completing this work is the only way people are able to stay in their homes and remain independent.

CILs offers both individual and systems advocacy. Individual advocacy is assisting an individual with a disability to protect his or her rights or to fight for needed resources. Through systems advocacy, we advance civil rights and equal access for all persons with disabilities on the local, state and federal levels. SYSTEMS ADVOCACY Our Independent Living Coordinators keep up-to-date on programs and legislation which may affect people with disabilities. Consumers are encouraged to contact their community leaders and legislators to inform them of their views on various programs and legislative issues. INDIVIDUAL ADVOCACY We work with people with disabilities to teach valuable self-advocacy skills, including: Learning the rights that they have already and making effective use of those rights. Learning how to effectively communicate their needs to both maintain the rights they already have and to make advancement in expanding the rights of persons with disabilities. OSCIL staff will also work with consumers to advocate for services to meet individual needs, including helping to understand the function and processes (necessary criteria, application process, deadlines, etc.) for Social Security, Vocational Rehabilitation, Medicare/Medicaid, and other service agencies.

Collaborative care plans are developed, services implemented and continued evaluations and monitoring are provided to ensure success.

The Visitation Center serves families whose children are in the care of DCYF due to substance use or mental health concerns. Families are able to have supervised visits in a home-like setting while receiving support in their recovery. The program provides for: Supervised Visits - Visits in a home environment with a focus on everyday family activities. Clinical Oversight - consultation and assessment, observation and clinical work around visits, assistance with coordination of supports and help with parenting skill building. Family Recovery Coaching - support with the recovery process, information and resource connections and help navigating the child welfare system. Transportation - transportation for the children to visits, if needed.
