The Norman Bird Sanctuary constitutes the largest area of preserved open space in Newport County. A wildlife refuge, NBS encompasses over 300 acres and seven miles of trails that wind through diverse habitats. Nearly 30 acres are maintained as hay fields. Woodlands are the most prominent plant community, and four ridges provide spectacular views of the surrounding ocean and ponds. Located next to the Visitor's Center and gift shop, the Sanctuary's 19th Century Barn Museum features natural history displays and a children's area with interpretive murals and hands-on exhibits.

Hillcrest Village is subsidized housing 62+, handicapped or disabled. In addition to 130 apartments, many of which are handicapped-accessible, the property includes a large community area with kitchen and laundry. There is ample ground-level parking as well as access to public transportation. Hillcrest Village provides rent subsidies to income-qualified applicants; utilities are included in the rent.

YPI is committed to building a strong and vocal community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQQ) youth and their allies to ensure that they are heard and accepted as members and leaders in our community. Youth, ages 13-23, are encouraged to hang out in YPIs Drop-In Center, participate in activities and programming, or use other services such as tutoring or support services. YPI’s drop-in center is a hang out space for LGBTQQ young people and their allies. Play some games, eat a healthy meal, get support and make new friends in a welcoming environment! There’s something different happening every day so come take a dance class, participate in a workshop, do yoga or talk about changing the world. Or just hang out! Programs that pay all or a portion of the home heating fuel expenses of people who are unable to purchase the resources to heat their homes without assistance. Also included are non-emergency programs like those funded through the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), also referred to as LIEAP or HEAP in some states, that provide home energy assistance for low-income households that apply, usually once per calendar year; and programs that pay for firewood, propane, butane, kerosene, coal or other bulk fuels that are used for heating or cooking purposes in situations where people have no other means of acquiring them. Heating fuel payment assistance programs may have age, income, disability, need or other eligibility requirements.
