Higher Ground International is a forward thinking and culturally grounded inter-generational social service NGO that advocates and provides programs for West African Immigrants, Refugees and Marginalized Communities in Rhode Island and Rural Villages in Liberia, West Africa. Located on the South side of Providence, Rhode Island, HGI's vibrant and welcoming RUKIYA CENTER provides members of the West African Immigrants and Refugees community with elder services (Sweetie Care, African Elders Enrichment Program), Soft skills pre-employment and workforce development, literacy classes for women, basic computer and design classes, therapeutic arts, cultural enrichment, advocacy, case management, immigration & citizenship classesand other wraparound services for youth and families. HGI’s for-profit arm, Broken Pieces International, engages adults, at-risk youth and other under-served populations in the design and manufacture of clothing and accessories that reflect the character and community of both HGI and the West African diaspora. This provides them with vital job training and economic opportunities, and the revenue generated supports HGI’s work in Liberia. This innovative model fosters important connections to the culture and history of the mother country for Liberians living abroad, and reinforces HGI’s mission to uplift communities through empowerment and self-sustainability. Sweetie Care African Elders Enrichment Program, Social Services, Cultural Services-Food is distributed on the THIRD (3rd) Thursdays of each month, except for December where the focus is fully on our elders for the holidays. The month of November is dedicated to HGI's annual Traditional & Ethnic Thanksgiving Food Distribution which is extended to 500 people/families. Participants MUST preregister to be included in the food distribution list that consists of 300 families per month. Participants must visit Higher Ground International Rukiya Center to inquire about signing up. There are no food distributions for the month of December. Transformational Services HGI offers a variety of cultural services, including culturally- centered community events, music, dance, stories. Culturally Appropriate non-perishable and staple food items, in partnership with Meals on Wheels Rhode Island, a weekly cultural food cafe. HGI's Women's Workforce Program provides workforce readiness education and training to female refugees and immigrants and prepares them for careers in: Manufacturing, Textiles, Social Enterprises. HGI's Education Program provides on site and community based opportunities to learn and grow professionally and personally. The Tri-County Community Action Agency Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides supplemental foods, healthcare referrals and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. Upon enrollment into the WIC program, we will complete a nutritional assessment for you and your eligible family members. We will then offer education on healthy eating, monthly vouchers for nutritious foods including eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, beans, tuna, fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, rice, iron fortified cereals, and juice as well as many other valuable resources. Supported Living (Non 24 hour) Participants in this setting typically share an apartment with a roommate or two, and the support is easily customizable to mirror the true amount of assistance a person needs to stay safe, yet maximize independence. Shared Living Arrangements- pairs and individual with developmental disabilities with a live-in community member, also known as a Home Provider. This pair works together to meet the participant's goals, share the household and responsibilities and finances, and ultimately create a family-like environment. Personalized Vocational Planning and Services- for accommodation support, career planning, exploration, discovery, job coaching, mentoring, and retention, pre-vocational skill building, resume building and interview preparation, vocational assessments and evaluations. The gym is located on the third floor on the west wing.
