Services: Heating Assistance & Weatherization Head Start Food Distribution Emergency Services Employment and Training WIC Tri-County’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, offers assistance with managing costs associated with home energy bills. Tri-County is able to help with paying fuel and utility bills during the winter months for eligible clients, and they can arrange for the installation of home insulation to reduce home-heating costs (gas, electric, propane, oil, kerosene or wood) through our weatherization program. Weatherization Program assists low-income individuals and families to permanently reduce their energy consumption and increase energy efficiency, thereby reducing the cost of energy bills. Energy audits are conducted in the home by their staff of qualified and friendly auditors. Energy audits will determine the need for insulation, weather-stripping, air sealing, pipe wrapping, and replacement of windows. Must meet income eligibility guidelines. Food Distribution: Offers assistance with all aspects of essential needs and daily living, including food assistance. They welcome individuals to visit their food pantries once per month, and offer distribution of canned goods, pasta, grain, juice, peanut butter, rice and flour and other foods as contributed through the State of Rhode Island and purchased through the Rhode Island Food Bank. The program provides youth with work experience opportunities in local businesses, public facilities and non-profit agencies. Work experiences provide youth with hands-on opportunities to develop the skills they will need upon entering the work force. Youth receive wages and other payments upon attaining certain benchmarks relative to their job performance. Youth also participate in a variety of career and personal development activities such as community service projects, field trips, post secondary exploration, and guest speakers from key RI industries. Youth Opportunity Center: Part of the State’s Youth works 411 system, the Youth Center provides academic and occupational assessment and exploration, employment assistance, paid and unpaid work experiences, intensive case management, job coaching, leadership skills, life skills training, tracking and follow up. Open to youth ages 14 -24 years old, for both in-school and out-of-school. The Tri-County Community Action Agency Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) provides supplemental foods, healthcare referrals and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. Upon enrollment into the WIC program, we will complete a nutritional assessment for you and your eligible family members. We will then offer education on healthy eating, monthly vouchers for nutritious foods including eggs, milk, cheese, peanut butter, beans, tuna, fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, rice, iron fortified cereals, and juice as well as many other valuable resources. Breastfeeding and lactation support and education are also available through the WIC program.

VNA of Care New England's physical therapists help patients restore movement and function, ease pain, and increase strength and mobility. Using a wide range of techniques, they work in the patient's home to evaluate and treat problems with moving, balance, strength, and conditioning. This may involve retraining skills that the patient had before an illness or teaching new skills such as using a walker or cane. The physical therapists will help develop an individualized exercise program to help patients achieve their goals. Physical therapists also focus on fall prevention and home safety to allow patients to remain at home, with each care plan designed with the patient’s unique home environment in mind. Our physical therapists help with: Injury and illness. Stroke. Neuromuscular diseases including Parkinson's. Brain injury. Surgery. Neurological diagnosis.

For adolescent girls, 13-17. Provides individual, group and family counseling in a long-term residential treatment program for women in recovery from chemical dependency. Daily living in a family atmosphere develops a sense of normalcy and belonging in a non-threatening, supportive, educative and chemically free environment. The program places a strong emphasis on the Twelve Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Assertiveness training as well as physical and recreational activities are designed to improve health and appearance. Special emphasis is placed on helping each woman develop positive feelings of self-worth that will support the ultimate goal of sobriety. A relapse prevention specialist provides residential and outpatient relapse prevention services. Eastman House also offers a continuing after care program. Community Care Alliance strives to empower people experiencing economic insecurity, mental illness and addiction, housing issues, and trauma-related concerns. They provide clinical and support services for individuals and families with long-term needs associated with mental illness and substance abuse. Their goal is to help people live as independently and as fully integrated within the community as possible These might include basic needs assistance to address emergencies— counseling, treatment, support services and residential programs for individuals and families impacted by serious mental illness and addiction— emergency and supportive housing to prevent homelessness and promote stabilization— alternative education and services for families with young children and adolescents— and employment, financial literacy and vocational training to improve self-sufficiency.

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program provides monthly payments to adults and children with a disability or blindness and who have income and resources below specified amounts. SSI payments can also be made to people 65 and older without disabilities who meet the financial limits. People who have worked long enough may also qualify to receive Social Security disability or retirement benefits as well as SSI. RI Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides monthly payments to people with limited income and resources. SSI is for people who are 65 or older, as well as people of any age, including children, who are blind or who have disabilities. APPLY- To get SSI, you must apply for any other government benefits for which you may be eligible. You must live in the United States or the Northern Mariana Islands to get SSI. *If you're not a US citizen, but you legally live in the US, you still may be able to get SSI. Avatar is a certified Placement Agency for Shared Living programs throughout Rhode Island. Avatar Residential was one of the first agencies in Rhode Island to provide Shared Living Arrangements (SLAs) as an alternative to group home living. The key to success is a strong relationship between residents and Shared Living Providers. Avatar coordinates 27 SLAs throughout the state of RI. Some of the people that Avatar supports have found a good fit in their apartment/independent living programs. They tailor services to what people need (shopping, budgeting, recreation) while also fostering a great deal of independence and self-sufficiency. Avatar also provides residential services to people who live at home with their families.

Recovery: St. Matthias Ministry This ministry is dedicated to reaching and supporting individuals struggling with drug and alcohol problems. We also provide help to families in need of guidance or support due to a loved one’s drug or alcohol problem. These problems can affect their everyday lives and also the lives of their families and loved ones. Rhode Island has one of the highest percentages of illicit drug, marijuana and alcohol use in the country. Therefore, this ministry also provides resource information, workshops, and education to the public in collaboration with other faith-based groups and recovery organizations

Catherine T. Murray Memorial Scholarship The Catherine T. Murray Memorial Scholarship supports the philosophy and spirit of OSCIL by facilitating access to education for persons having disability. PLEASE NOTE, ONLY RHODE ISLAND RESIDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP. The Catherine T. Murray Memorial Scholarship was established in 1995 by Catherine Murray, a long-time educator and also a board member and valued volunteer at the Ocean State Center for Independent Living. It was her wish to support the philosophy and spirit of OSCIL through a scholarship that gives people with disability access to higher education. Grants of $1000+ are awarded to help students with a disability to continue their education past high school. Scholarship funds can be used for educational expenses such as tuition or the purchase of textbooks. They may also be used to obtain assistive/adaptive equipment or devices that aid the student in meeting their educational goals. To qualify for this scholarship applicants must: -have a significant disability -be a Rhode Island resident (Your home address MUST be in RI) -plan to attend a college, technical school, or a trade/vocational program in the upcoming academic year Preference is based on career goals, merit, and economic need.
