They work to facilitate long-range planning activities that result in the development of comprehensive strategies to safeguard the public and property. This section is responsible for the administration of the National Flood Insurance Program, statewide emergency planning, including the ongoing enhancement of Rhode Island's Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan and the coordination of local and state plans, utilizing an all-hazards approach. The Planning and Mitigation Section also focuses on current topics in emergency management, such as improving the State's resiliency to climate change and for future disasters through adaptation and mitigation programs.

SRIV's mission is to recruit volunteers, of all ages, and match their skills and interests to provide direct services to seniors and others in need and to support our community partners in Washington County and Jamestown. Volunteer at one or more of 50 plus Community Partners in a myriad of meaningful opportunities or internally at SRIV making a difference in some of the following ways:
  • Independent Aging Services Program: Transport assistance for homebound seniors or disabled adults to healthcare appointments, pharmacies, grocery stores and housing appointments; Delivery of food Meals on Wheels and/or farmers’ markets (or placement at a food pantry); Grocery shopping and delivery for a senior client; Companionship/visitation for a home bound older senior and/or respite care for their full-time caregiver; Minor home repairs (very minor—larger jobs are referred to partner agencies), fall clean ups and snow removal for walkways for senior safety.

SRIV offers opportunities for our members to use their skills, talents and time to benefit individuals in need and to benefit the greater community. Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a national, evidence-based family visiting program that provides free and voluntary support to families. It builds strong communities, thriving families and children that are healthy, safe and ready to learn by matching parents and caregivers with trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, from prenatal through kindergarten. PAT serves expectant mothers and families. This program provides informational support and encouragement to parents to help their children develop optimally during the early years of life. The program features parent educators that are dedicated to forming lasting relationships with families.
