Child Advocacy Centers | Rhode Island Office of the Child Advocate

An independent and autonomous Rhode Island state agency that advocates for children in the care of DCYF to ensure they are afforded adequate protection and quality services while maintaining their individual rights and dignity. The legal office provides services for litigation, monitor placement facilities, review child fatalities, legislative advocacy, attendance at public hearings and conferences. Services include: litigation, education; family court representation of children voluntarily placed in DCYF custody; investigation of institutional child abuse/neglect and child fatality reviews.

Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) creates a team of professionals who serve to protect and heal a child who has endured trauma. Under this model, the child comes to a child-friendly environment and meets with a trained interviewer while the other team members observe from another room via a video screen. The child is informed of the equipment and of the observing team, and is never forced to answer any questions.

Tides is a non-traditional agency, unlike any other. Their “No-walls” philosophy puts them in the heart of neighborhoods where clients live—the most distressed and poverty-stricken areas of Rhode Island. Community-based programs service these youth, aged 6-21, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Programs include strength-based counseling, structured recreation, cognitive behavioral therapy, after-school programming and two small, licensed schools.
