The Rose Island Foundation is a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization whose mission is to preserve the historic and environmental integrity of Rose Island, to maintain and operate its lighthouse and to provide education and public access for all people. Rose Island is about 18 acres in size. It consists of a wildlife refuge, the lighthouse, and the Fort Hamilton Barracks. Between March 1 and August 15 public access around the perimeter of Rose Island is restricted for nesting birds. In the winter, from late October to early April, you can often see harbor seals resting on Citing Rock on the east side of Rose Island, which is surrounded by extensive underwater eel grass beds. A mile offshore, beyond the reach of Newport’s utility lines and services, the Rose Island Lighthouse stands as an independent, energy-efficient building that was home to keepers and their families for over a hundred years. After the Newport Bridge was built the Light Station was abandoned as an aid to navigation. For the next 14 years it fell victim to scavengers, vandals and the weather. In 1984, volunteers of the Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation restored it to its 1912 appearance, installing environmentally sensitive utilities for electricity, water, sewer, and heat. On August 7, 1993, after the funds had been raised to pay all the restoration bills, the beacon was joyously relit. Rose Island Light is once again listed on today's charts as a private aid to navigation. The Lighthouse is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors of all ages can learn about the Lighthouse’s history and can experience, first-hand, the keeper’s self-sufficient, resourceful way of life...learning that lasts a lifetime.

Oak Lawn Branch invites the public to delve into local history, offers extensive youth programming and provides the neighborhood with a family-friendly atmosphere.

A two-year academic enrichment program that supports high potential 7th and 8th graders in the Providence public schools. During the school year, Breakthrough students spend more than 40 hours engaged in academic enrichment and leadership development programming. During the summer, this number more than triples. These additional out-of-school time programming hours are critical for Breakthrough students as they practice and apply the skills they learn in school, build academic confidence, improve academic performance, and become self-advocates and leaders in both their Breakthrough and school communities. Teaching fellows are high school and college students, ages 16-22, from local public, private, and parochial schools. During the Summerbridge Program, teaching fellows are recruited nationally through the Breakthrough Collaborative’s Summer Teaching Fellowship Program. Break Through to College is a six-year program which provides rigorous and culturally relevant academic enrichment and leadership development during critical out-of-school times to low-income, first generation college-bound Providence public school students. Break Through to College leverages the relational power of near-peers to serve as teachers, tutors, mentors, and advisors through a “students teaching students” model.

Educating and inspiring the youth within our communities by promoting a healthy, drug-free lifestyle through instructional and adventurous activities. We develop responsible citizens using the volunteer resources of a civilian and military partnership. The teamwork and esprit-de-corps enjoyed by the Young Marines help them discover the hero within.

FirstWorks has built deep, ongoing relationships with over 30 public and charter schools across Rhode Island to provide access to artists and help fill the gap left from severe public spending cuts. The program features workshops taught by leading artists who provide rich experiential learning in a classroom setting, allows students and their families to attend world-class performances, and provides professional development and lesson plans for teachers.

4-H is a leader in youth development, which began on the local level in response to evolving needs for new kinds of educational experiences for youth. From the beginning, this youth-serving organization offered “hands-on” learning activities for young people so they might become productive citizens.

Girl Scouting helps cultivate values, social conscience and self-esteem in girls, while also teaching them critical life skills that will enable them to succeed as adults. In Girl Scouting, and its special girl only environment, girls discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together. The program is delivered through troops comprised of five age levels: Daisy, 5 - 6 years old; Brownie, 6 - 8 years; Junior, 8 - 11 years old; Cadette, 11 - 14 years old and Senior, 14 - 17 years old. Individual memberships are available for girls who cannot attend regular troop meetings. A summer camp program is conducted at six camps throughout the council's area. Bilingual Hispanic staff. Troop Leader/Co-Leader: Work with a group of girls and mentor them as they make new friends and develop connections that will last a lifetime. Troop Family and Friends: Assist with driving, activity planning, snacks, money management, or other tasks necessary to keep the troop running oh-so-smoothly from week to week. Cookie Volunteers: Coordinate the annual cookie sale at the troop level. Set up cookie booths, manage inventory and money, and then watch the girls light up when they earn the rewards for being the best cookie sellers ever! Service Unit Volunteers: Mentor adult volunteers as they work with Girl Scouts to create memories they will never forget.
