Nestled in a residential area of East Providence, Winslow Gardens is a 10-story apartment community that provides housing and services for older adults of modest means. They are a local nonprofit organization whose operations are guided by a value-driven and compassionate philosophy of treating each resident as a family member. They provide high-quality, personalized care while respecting individual needs and wants, and have been serving Greater East Providence since 1971. Their goal is to provide residents with the opportunity to live comfortably and safely with dignity and respect in a caring community. Each resident has a private apartment varying in size that can accommodate one or two people. Apartments include a kitchenette with stove and refrigerator, individual climate controls, security cameras, cable and phone connections, private bathrooms and amenities such as laundry services, onsite beauty salon, weekly ecumenical religious services, outdoor courtyard garden, fish pond, patio and more.

Higher Ground International is a forward thinking and culturally grounded inter-generational social service NGO that advocates and provides programs for West African Immigrants, Refugees and Marginalized Communities in Rhode Island and Rural Villages in Liberia, West Africa. Located on the South side of Providence, Rhode Island, HGI's vibrant and welcoming RUKIYA CENTER provides members of the West African Immigrants and Refugees community with elder services (Sweetie Care, African Elders Enrichment Program), Soft skills pre-employment and workforce development, literacy classes for women, basic computer and design classes, therapeutic arts, cultural enrichment, advocacy, case management, immigration & citizenship classesand other wraparound services for youth and families. HGI’s for-profit arm, Broken Pieces International, engages adults, at-risk youth and other under-served populations in the design and manufacture of clothing and accessories that reflect the character and community of both HGI and the West African diaspora. This provides them with vital job training and economic opportunities, and the revenue generated supports HGI’s work in Liberia. This innovative model fosters important connections to the culture and history of the mother country for Liberians living abroad, and reinforces HGI’s mission to uplift communities through empowerment and self-sustainability. Sweetie Care African Elders Enrichment Program, Social Services, Cultural Services-Food is distributed on the THIRD (3rd) Thursdays of each month, except for December where the focus is fully on our elders for the holidays. The month of November is dedicated to HGI's annual Traditional & Ethnic Thanksgiving Food Distribution which is extended to 500 people/families. Participants MUST preregister to be included in the food distribution list that consists of 300 families per month. Participants must visit Higher Ground International Rukiya Center to inquire about signing up. There are no food distributions for the month of December. Transformational Services HGI offers a variety of cultural services, including culturally- centered community events, music, dance, stories. Culturally Appropriate non-perishable and staple food items, in partnership with Meals on Wheels Rhode Island, a weekly cultural food cafe. HGI's Women's Workforce Program provides workforce readiness education and training to female refugees and immigrants and prepares them for careers in: Manufacturing, Textiles, Social Enterprises. HGI's Education Program provides on site and community based opportunities to learn and grow professionally and personally.
