volunteers are people age 55 and older who provide companionship for frail older adults in the home, at day centers, or other community sites. Companions assist with daily tasks, helping those served to remain living in the community for longer. Companions may provide transportation to medical appointments, shopping assistance, meal preparation, and advocacy. They also provide respite to caregivers of frail elders. By remaining active and contributing to their communities, Companions benefit from the program along with the clients they serve.

DEA Protective Services Unit is responsible for investigating complaints of elderly abuse of Rhode Islanders 60 and older by a family member, caregiver or person with duty of care.. Abuse may include physical, emotional, sexual, financial exploitation, or abandonment. The DEA Protective Services Unit develops a care plan to prevent additional abuse and address the elder’s social service needs. Self-Neglect occurs when a person is no longer able to care for himself/herself. Reports of self-neglect are also made to the DEA Protective Services Unit. The senior’s needs are assessed and necessary services are 0ffered.

@Home Cost Share: For older adults with care needs, the @Home Cost-Share program is available to help with some care expenses. Eligible participants can access in-home services – such as help with housekeeping, meal preparation or personal care – and/or community-based programming at adult day health centers at a reduced rate. You may be eligible for the program if you are age 65 or older, meet income guidelines, and need some assistance in the home with your personal or health care.

Important Policies: Location of shelter is confidential, residents are expected to maintain confidentiality: Maximum of 2 nights out/month, except in emergencies; No time limit as long as working on goals of permanent housing and following all shelter rules; Residents are responsible for their own medications, lockers are available; residents will have to lock up medications. Smoking allowed in designated outdoor areas; A harm reduction model is used-sobriety is not required, however residents are expected to respect peers in recovery; Bedrooms and common areas are shared; There may be a possibility teenage boys are housed ***Financial assistance, including rent and utilities, to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking who are fleeing abusive situations, at risk of becoming homeless or at risk of returning to their abuser as a result of COVID-19. LeadSafe Homes Program was developed to help eliminate the dangers of lead in the property. Funds are available to properties built before 1978, properties with pregnant women and children under the age of six, and home-based daycares or foster homes that may contain lead paint. There are no out of pocket expenses or monthly payments. Funds are grants/loans and loans are forgiven after 5 years for owner-occupied properties and 10 years for rental properties. Improvements may include new windows and doors, interior and exterior painting and lead safe yards and play areas.
