Higher Ground International is a forward thinking and culturally grounded inter-generational social service NGO that advocates and provides programs for West African Immigrants, Refugees and Marginalized Communities in Rhode Island and Rural Villages in Liberia, West Africa. Located on the South side of Providence, Rhode Island, HGI's vibrant and welcoming RUKIYA CENTER provides members of the West African Immigrants and Refugees community with elder services (Sweetie Care, African Elders Enrichment Program), Soft skills pre-employment and workforce development, literacy classes for women, basic computer and design classes, therapeutic arts, cultural enrichment, advocacy, case management, immigration & citizenship classesand other wraparound services for youth and families. HGI’s for-profit arm, Broken Pieces International, engages adults, at-risk youth and other under-served populations in the design and manufacture of clothing and accessories that reflect the character and community of both HGI and the West African diaspora. This provides them with vital job training and economic opportunities, and the revenue generated supports HGI’s work in Liberia. This innovative model fosters important connections to the culture and history of the mother country for Liberians living abroad, and reinforces HGI’s mission to uplift communities through empowerment and self-sustainability. Sweetie Care African Elders Enrichment Program, Social Services, Cultural Services-Food is distributed on the THIRD (3rd) Thursdays of each month, except for December where the focus is fully on our elders for the holidays. The month of November is dedicated to HGI's annual Traditional & Ethnic Thanksgiving Food Distribution which is extended to 500 people/families. Participants MUST preregister to be included in the food distribution list that consists of 300 families per month. Participants must visit Higher Ground International Rukiya Center to inquire about signing up. There are no food distributions for the month of December. Transformational Services HGI offers a variety of cultural services, including culturally- centered community events, music, dance, stories. Culturally Appropriate non-perishable and staple food items, in partnership with Meals on Wheels Rhode Island, a weekly cultural food cafe. HGI's Women's Workforce Program provides workforce readiness education and training to female refugees and immigrants and prepares them for careers in: Manufacturing, Textiles, Social Enterprises. HGI's Education Program provides on site and community based opportunities to learn and grow professionally and personally. Programs within the formal criminal justice system that provide facilities for the detention of people who have been charged with a crime and are awaiting trial, and/or the confinement, treatment, employment, training and discipline of people who have been sentenced to imprisonment after conviction for a criminal offense.

The Office of the Attorney General Consumer Protection Unit investigates and mediates consumer complaints concerning unfair and unlawful business practices and misleading advertising arising out of alleged violations of the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. If groups of people are victimized by a deceptive trade practice, this office may file in the Superior Court a civil investigative demand, which is a formal investigation. In appropriate cases, a lawsuit to stop the illegal business practice may be initiated. Apart from carrying out its statutory responsibilities, the Unit also provides information and referral services to the general public. Consumers are directed to the appropriate governmental or private agencies for help in answering specialized questions or resolving disputes that are not within the Unit's jurisdiction.
