Centers for Independent Living teach a wide range of skills needed to live independently and manage life with a disability. Skills training is available to persons with disabilities in almost any topic where there is a need for more independence. CILs work with individuals to increase their skills which can help them gain more control of their lives.
Skills training can include basic everyday responsibilities such as: self-care, meal preparation, budgeting, and arranging transportation. It also can address housing needs, teaching individuals the importance of self-advocacy, one’s need for accommodations and/or rights in the community.
***Life skills training is goal directed and does not involve long-term case management or therapeutic intervention.
As part of OSCIL’s mission to provide outreach, education and opportunities for peer support, OSCIL offers Lunch and Learn workshops highlighting various solutions that can increase access in your home and community.

Services eligible to children that attend participating schools, Head Starts and community programs. The Molar Express provides x-rays and restorative treatment such as fillings, root canals and extractions (all with parental consent).

Provide mouth guards (to prevent sports injuries)
Provide or recommend special preventive care to safeguard against problems, such as teething and gum disease
Offer habit counseling (e.g., thumb sucking, pacifier use)
Offer assessment and treatment for teeth straightening and improper bite in the young child (orthodontics)
Repair tooth cavities and/or defects
Diagnose oral conditions associated with diseases such as diabetes, congenital heart defects, asthma and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Diagnose and treat dental developmental difficulties (e.g., root canals on adult teeth that have not fully formed)
Provide management of gum diseases and conditions, such as pediatric periodontal disease, ulcers and tongue-tie (when the membrane that attaches the tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter than normal. If tongue-tie interferes with breastfeeding, a Dr. Paquin can clip the membrane to release the tongue)
Care for dental injuries (e.g., fractured or knocked-out teeth)

OSCIL works together with state and local government and public entities to eliminate architectural, communication, and attitudinal barriers. OSCIL has provided technical assistance to T.F. Greene Airport, area hospitals, Roger Williams Park, the Board of Canvassers, and many other private businesses and organizations to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) and Rhode Island Law 42-87-2. Individuals who experience barriers in the community, i.e. inaccessible restaurants, public events, schools, etc. are encouraged to call OSCIL for information and assistance.
Part of OSCIL’s mission is to bring information to the community to help address barriers to independent living. This includes presentations on:
-Assistive technology demonstrations
-Barriers to effective communication
-How Center services can help your independent living goals
-Understanding nursing home transition
-Utilizing telecommunication devices for the Deaf
-How home modifications can increase access in a home
-Young adult independent living skills training
-Effective public testimony

The RIde Program is for people with disabilities that prevent the use of fixed-route buses, RIPTA offers paratransit service through the RIde Program, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ADA Paratransit provides door to door service and requires advance reservations.
RIde is a shared ride service so your trip time may not be scheduled at the exact time you request. A RIde Customer Service Agent will work with you to find a time that works. You may need to call back later to find out the time your trip is scheduled. Transportation to anywhere in RI, not limited to appointments, clients can also get transportation to non medical locations such as stores, mall, movies, events, etc. The service area reaches as far as Target in Seekonk and Market Basket in Attleboro. Available to anyone with a disability, children under 13 years old are not allowed to ride alone.
